Environmental Impact Statements

State planning legislation may require the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) when seeking approval for certain developments.

The EIS process describes:

  • Current environment
  • Project’s environmental impact including –
  • Direct, indirect & cumulative impacts resulting from construction, commissioning, operation and decommissioning of the project
  • Strategies to avoid, mitigate or offset these impacts.

In New South Wales, all development applications require a Statement of Environmental Effects (SOEE) or a Review of Environmental Factors (REF) for certain activities that do not require consent. The scope of these assessments will vary on the nature of the works.
